Q. Why is the fire department requesting to inspect my business or building?
A. The inspections will allow us to create pre-plans to assist emergency personnel in better performing their duties in the event of a fire or other emergency.
Q. Will I be fined for fire code violations as a result of the inspection?
A. No. This inspection is only for developing pre-plans to assist the department.
However, if serious violations are discovered, they will be pointed out and the officer
conducting the inspection will unofficially recommend the violations be corrected.
Q. What do I need to do/provide to the fire department for the inspection?
A. Very little will be required on your part. If you have blueprints or a fire safety plan it can be useful to the department.
Also, the inspecting officer may ask to access some restricted areas during the inspection. If you wish you may accompany the officer during the inspection.
Q. I have sensitive information in my business, that I don't want others to see. Can I refuse to allow the fire department to inspect that area?
A. Yes, you may refuse to let the department into any or all of your business. However, the more areas the department has access to during the inspection, the better prepared they will be in the event of an emergency. The fire department will never share information that could be sensitive or private. The department’s sole interest is preparing for an emergency.
Q. How long will the inspection take?
A. Depending on the size and complexity of your building, the inspection could take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more.
During the inspection, the officer will make every attempt to minimize the disruption their visit has on your day-to-day operations.
